Dewease Wins Grove 95th Over Outlaws In Impressive Style, Nets 17K For Victory

Mechanicsburg – Pennsylvania driver Lance Dewease drove by World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz not once, but twice, on Saturday night to score the $17,000 Morgan Cup title for the 95th victory of his career at Williams Grove Speedway.

First, Dewease drove by Schatz in the six-lap dash to earn the pole for the main event by driving away and then in the 30-lap feature, after Schatz got the early lead, the Fayetteville flyer repeated the feat to get the win.

Schatz was leading over Dewease and Danny Dietrich on the second tour when the only caution flag of the race unfurled for a slowing Logan Schuchart.

Schatz chose the outside lane for the double file restart and again pulled out in front of Dewease when action resumed.

But Dewease was able to prevent Schatz from getting too far out in front, keeping him in sight so that when the leader ran up on the rear of the field beginning on lap 10, he was able to quickly close the distance.

From laps 10 through 14 Schatz had the rear of the field just in front of him, in essence bunching up the leaders with Dietrich still in third after having lost the spot to Daryn Pittman only to reclaim it.

Schatz officially began lapping cars on the 15th tour and that’s when Dewease rode his lowside money lane into control as the pair raced out of the fourth corner.

With 10 laps to go, Dewease had a 2.416 second lead as he worked through traffic flawlessly.

Schatz did seem to gain momentum during the final five circuits as he took one second off of Dewease’s advantage before the finish, to cross the line 1.251 seconds behind.

“It normally takes five or six laps for it to get going really good,” Dewease said of his car.

“I thought we’d be alright if I could get in front of him (Schatz).

Dewease’s 84-year old mechanic Dave Brown Sr. remarked on the car’s performance and its performer.

“The car was working pretty good tonight. It’s not quite there but it’s pretty good,” he said.

“He’s amazing,” Brown said of driver Dewease.

“He doesn’t spin the wheels and he’s so smooth. I couldn’t ask for anybody any better, I can tell you that.”

Dietrich ended up third followed by Pittman and Freddie Rahmer.

Sixth through 10th went to Kraig Kinser, 24th starter Giovanni Scelzi, Brent Marks, David Gravel and Jacob Allan.

Heats went to Dewease, Dietrich, Rahmer and Schatz with Scelzi winning the C Main and Carson Macedo taking the B Main.

Dewease won the dash to earn the pole for the feature.

Kraig Kinser set fast time over the 38 car field with a lap of 19.334 seconds.
